Travel Journal - A trip to PEI - Day 0 and 1

This is long overdue but better late than never!  We have always set our eyes to one day take our family to visit Atlantic Canada.  In 2018 the time seemed right.  The kids had been learning about PEI at school and they were talking about visiting the potatoe museum.  My girl had read some of Lucy M. Montgomery's books and my boy was learning more about Canada.  The next hurdle to overcome?  Costs

I was so excited when I realized that between the four of us we could manage to use our airline's air miles.  The taxes we had to pay were not too steep, so with that in mind, we set off to plan our trip!

We rented an SUV for our travels since we flew to Halifax even though our trip would be to PEI.  I compared flights to Halifax, Charlottetown and Moncton. Because we were using points, our options were limited and I was trying to compare airport tax prices.  Halifax turned out the most feasible and cost effective.

Having learned in 2018 that we could send a notice to AirCanada about my son's allergies, I took advantage of the service again.  Because none of us had enough points to purchase all 4 tickets, we had separate bookings.  I called the centre after booking and crossed my fingers they would help me place all four of us together; or at least 2 and 2 together.  I honestly did not have high expectations as we were using Aeroplan Miles, but to my surprise, the request was super easy! Not only did we get seated together, but we were adviced to notify at check-in that our son had nut allergies.  They made note of it on our bookings and we were able to board first.

DAY 1
We arrived in the evening so I had booked a room in Truro, on our way into PEI.  By the time we got there, we were all tired and hungry.  Stephen went to get some McDonalds and we enjoyed the Fish and Chips!

We stayed at the Hampton Inn in Truro - The price was very reasonable and the rooms were very nice and clean.  There is pretty much nothing in the area but it is beside the highway, which was perfect for us.

DAY 2 - TRURO into PEI

We woke up refreshed and decided to ask locals for a good place to eat lunch.  We headed into Truro to check the place out before heading out.  Truro is a little charming town and we enjoyed the quick pit stop.  On our way there, we stopped by a supermarket to stock up on snacks for the road trip.

For lunch, we went to Murphy's Fish and Chips.  We just asked people at the hotel for suggestions and this is where everyone suggested.  We arrived early but by the time we settled, the entire restaurant was packed.

The Fish N Chips did not disappoint....

We did not go directly to PEI partly because my good friend had told me about catching the Tidal Bore.  At first I had no idea what she was talking about and to be honest, even when we headed there, we were a bit puzzled....this is not where most tourists go, and you must check the tidal bore schedule.  We arrived and could tell we were not the only ones.  There were plenty of people, though not too much to make one uncomfortable.  And then the anticipation...what is this all about?

I have to admit - it was pretty cool.  It looked like there are plans to build a bigger tourist spot there but at the time we were there, the facilities were sufficient and comfortable.  There is a small gift shop there, and washroom facilities.

From there, we continued onto our journey into PEI, being willing to stop by anywhere to check things out.  We had originally planned a few other stops but as we drove we decided to just relax and take things easy

We finally crossed the Confederation Bridge (we had to wake the kids up because they wanted to see it) and we laughed that we could say we had 'been' to New Brunswick for a total of 2 minutes :)

Continue to Day 2....
