The Face behind the Fundraising Event

Image
Our family have been committed to supporting a vocational school in Niger, Africa for a last few years.  Part of this commitment meant praying for the staff and students in the school and raising funds.  But a bigger part has been teaching our family the value of developing relationships, of taking initiative to continue to learn and to continue to seek God for guidance as to how and where this 'support' ought to be. This year we are learning about the Hot Lunch Program the school has.  Here is some of the information beyond just "oh, they need money to pay for hot lunches for the girls" Here is some information and photos I got from our partner missionaries who are part of the staff at this school in Africa.  I'm adding her comment about the effects of the current Ebola Crisis in this excerpt as well: Fortunately ebola has not reached the borders of Niger although there have been cases in neighbouring Nigeria. We continue to pray for His mercy and protec

What a Social Media Frenzy caused me to do this week

If you are at all connected with social media you would at least be aware of the newest trend:  the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise money for ALS Research. I was on vacation all last week but even then, I noticed friends and friends of friends posting videos of themselves being poured ice water into themselves and then challenging other people to do the same (and to follow up with donating to the ALS Association. So far I have not been nominated - and I wondered what that means - but seeing so many people participate caused me to act. First, I thought it was intriguing seeing so many people being willing to not only go through the challenge but supposedly taking action to donate. Then, I wondered how many of those people took time to learn about ALS and what it is (beside a 2 liner explanation) And how many people took the time to reflect on their response as they learned about the disease. And then many other thoughts started pouring in... (sorry, no pun intended) How

The Camping Novice

My husband is a true adventurer though not many people know it - he spends hours and hours in front of the computer only because it is his job.  In his dreams, he would be making fire, backpacking, and canoeing. Me, on the other hand - well, I don't dream of adventures though I am open to new ones IF and WHEN people take the lead. For years now my husband has been talking about going camping but we have never gone because I am the planner in the family and this planner had absolutely no idea where to start. Then, this year, a friend of mine told me Ontario Parks has a "Learn to Camp" program .  It is a program that teaches the novice all the basics about camping in Ontario.  And as I read more about it, I got excited -- it sounded like it was exactly what we wanted.  We wanted to camp but didn't know where to start and we didn't want to invest in all the equipment without knowing if the kids would survive it. So after some thought, we
