Camping Adventures - Awenda PP

Every year our family ventures out to try new campsites.  Last year we tried two because my friend was visiting from Vancouver.  I asked her what she wanted to do and she said "Camping!" so even though we didn't have a lot of free time, my gracious husband was willing to pack for a one night camping trip - I know, I know...so short...but what we discovered was amazing....

I had never heard of this park but from the moment we entered, we knew there was something magical and different about this place.

For one, the closer we got, the less cars we saw - always a good sign of a great campsite!!!! And as we entered the Provincial Park we were greeted but tall and lean trees....lots of them....so many and so dense that it hid the sun.

We were glad to hear we were allowed to check in and settle as soon as we got - the entire park was full, we were told, but what makes Awenda different is that the campsites are spreadout - there is so much space in between that you really don't bother anyone and you really feel like you are alone in the forest!

we forgot the mullet!  grab a rock - it will have to make do!

Food is very important

We are hungry, dad!
There are four beaches in Awenda, but they are not close so we drove to the beach and then walked...and walked...and walked more.  The closest one and busiest of all was OK but we continued venturing out - there is a dog beach too.  But we heard from people that the farthest beach was the prettiest of all...we were not in a hurry so we walked to the end.  Yes, it was quite a walk (I think 20 minutes?) but the further we walked the less people we saw

My kids and husband can play in the sand all day long - we stayed there past 6PM - we heard that the sunsets were amazing but we were not prepared - we did not have flashlights with us and we were in the farthest beach so we thought it wiser to make our way back before it got dark

Once back - time to eat again!!!! We needed fire so we stopped by the shop to get some kindling and wood

The sites are so wide that you can hardly see your neighbours - even though we were 'next' to the washrooms, we heard nothing.  The only "problem" was that at night we did see the lights of cars driving into the washroom - but it didn't bother us at all

Before you know it, it was morning of Day 2 already :(  We would have stayed longer but we were busy so we had to pack and go.

On our way home we stopped by Penetangueshene, ON to visit Discovery Harbour (it was also because one of the kiddos felt car sick)

We had a lunch picnic at Discovery Harbour

We could have stayed at Awenda a couple of more days - it is an interesting area and close enough to Toronto, and yet it feels completely far away - If we had an SUV we could have brought scooters and bikes - a lot of campers were biking there.  The Beaches are ok but the water is extremely rocky - my daughter broke her sandals.  I would not recommend the beach for swimming and little kids.  If we were to return, we might just stay at Awenda and do a beach day in Wasaga.

Lovely site...it makes me want to go back looking at this!
