Food, Kids, Allergies and Hong Kong

This is the third post on a series of posts on our last trip to Hong Kong.  My son is allergic to nuts and both kids are not that adventurous with food, so we had some challenges coming to a city that serves nuts and nut related products everywhere!

READER BEWARE: You might be hungry if you keep reading!!!!!

HIT:  Midnight Feasts - There are kiosks like this (this one was very busy) that sells all kids of snacks.  Just give it a try!!! The kids loved it and aside from a little prayer for no nut reaction, we never had any issues!

We tried this FRIED beef giant wiener...interesting concept!

HIT:  Take them to a REAL Market - We took them to a real market at 8 AM on our way for breakfast on the first morning (Since everyone is jet lagged).  It was a great 'trip' and it was not busy because the merchants were just setting up.  They got to see and smell lots of things

HIT:  Get some fresh fruit (not from the supermarket).  We loved the mangos.  And they were sold per 4 units...Perfect to keep things fresh all the time

HIT:  Take advantage of Jet Lag - on the first few days take the kids out for Hong Kong Style breakfast.  Then go back and have a nap if you have to :D  We tried everything we thought the kids had never tried!

I had to take them there!

HIT:  SEAFOOD like you've never seen before!  See if you can try to go to those places where you pick and buy seafood and then they take all you bought to a nearby restaurant to cook them to order.  It's expensive, I grant you that, but it might be a worthwhile experience

Might not be an adult's favourite to use fresh crabs but balance your meals.  My son loves cheese.  So we got half of the crabs to be cooked with e-noodles on a bed of cheese - HIS ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE "CHINESE FOOD"

HIT:  Keep eating at 3/4/5 PM!  We usually stop for rest and snacks at around this time.  Dinner isn't usually til 7 or 8 PM!

We bought often food and took them home for breakfast

Remember, don't forget what your kids like to eat - if they are happy, you are happy.  We ordered wontons with macaroni ... Son ate the macaroni :D

HIT:  Fancy Feast - Our family treated us for an awesome Peking Duck feast at the Hyatt in Shatin.  Awesomeness...but if you get a chance, try their dessert platter.  It's East meets West.  By the looks you wouldn't know it but they used lots of Very Chinese ingredients!

We made a few trips to eateries that the kids were more familiar with...only to find they were a hit a miss:

HIT: McDonalds:  The basics (burgers and nuggets) were the best sellers for our kids.  Mommy loved the Asian stuff such as macaroni soup for breakfast and taro pie.

Beware:  milk doesn't taste the same.  And they don't sell COLD chocolate milk

Hit AND Miss:  Pizza Hut.  Son craved cheese so we had lunch at Pizza Hut.  Daughter liked the garlic bread but they were the size of her hand.  Son loved the Parmesan cheese (not so much the pizzas, they were just a canvas for the cheese!).  Total miss?  No garden salads or Ceasar Salads.  The salads they serve are rather sweet rather than acidic

HIT:  HOT DOGS - These are hard to find!!!!!!  We bumped into a kiosk that sold SIMPLE hot dogs that the son loved....

TOTAL MISS:  He ordered pasta, and he got this.  Octopus Ink pasta with salmon on top.  Do I need to explain any further?

HIT (but expensive):  "American Style burger" (That's what it said in the menu!) You would think it would be easy ??? Not really.  And ketchup is at a premium....

HIT:  Juice Bars.....WIth all that fresh fruit why not!!!!

HIT:  Haagen Daz has an ice cream fondue kit now. Daughter went crazy over it.
MISS:  Son was too worried about nuts (and so was I) So he didn't try it

HIT:  Fancy Dim Sum.  If you are looking for unconventional, these are buns...not mushroom!  Lei Garden in Shatin

HIT OR MISS?  If you really want to try interesting Dim Sum, at Disney, ONLY on weekends, you can get them at the Crystal Lotus Restaurant.  We were there on a weekday so only Shrimp Dumplings shaped like Mickey

Miss?  KFC - Yes, I took them to KFC once.....They have funky stuff but also the traditional stuff.  BUT....no regular fries so the kids were not that thrilled - the fries they serve is spicy.

And I noticed something funny - people wear gloves to eat at KFC in Hong Kong

COMPLETE HIT:  Macau
For Lunch we made reservations at the Albergue 1601.  Totally recommended.  The portions are BIG

And for dessert?  Cafe Nata for egg tarts

And some Dried and salted cod – otherwise known as Bacalhau

Pork Chop in a bun - greasy goodness that my stomach couldn't finish - still managed to take a pic :D

All in 1 day !!!! (and the kids had a McDonalds' Stop too!)

HIT:  More dessert - 33 Kam Fai Path, Yuen Long, Hong Kong For dessert.  We stayed nearby so it made sense to go!

Last but not least...stop for Milk Dessert at the Yee Shun Milk Company
